Introducing the COPE Program-Cognitive Optimization and Performance Enhancement

Tired of feeling like a prisoner to your workload? Are those thoughts negatively impacting your work performance, personal life, and ability to sleep? Those thoughts are very common but the key to lasting change is not a common solution.

Negative thoughts sabotage performance and, as we all know, are far too common. Making matters worse, many people feel trapped with a “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” mindset. They have read the best-selling books on time-management and attended seminars on how to get organized, only to realize a few weeks later nothing has changed. All of this is damaging professionally and personally.

How can you benefit from my 30 plus years working in the field of cognitive remediation? Having spent my entire career helping people re-wire their brains after a traumatic brain injury, I know there is no “one size fits all” approach. Individual experiences and genetics wire the brain in unique ways. The key to making lasting change lies in recognizing thought patterns and perceptions and how these areas impact problem-solving and decision making. “Optimization” is defined as the action of making the best or most effective use of a situation or resource. The resource, as it relates to improving performance, is your brain.

Current research has disproven many of the earlier beliefs related to aging brains and new learning. Based on Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change and adapt, you can develop routines that are more congruous to your personal situation and equally as important, extinguish old, inefficient habits. These new habits can be developed into your 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

I have developed the Cognitive Optimization and Performance Enhancement Program (COPE) to help individuals identify ways to optimize brain function, increase their ability to execute tasks and ultimately reduce stress. As every brain is different, every COPE plan is unique. Your COPE plan will help you understand how your brain functions and the processes that you use to complete tasks. You will be amazed at how much cognitive activity is involved in seemingly simple activities such as engaging in a conversation or managing a weekly schedule. Understanding and increasing efficiency with how you manage tasks, respond to challenging situations, and communicate with others will ultimately increase your productivity and feeling of calm.

At the same time, we are working your plan, we will also be identifying ways to increase your Cognitive Reserve. Cognitive Reserve is your brain’s ability to maintain the same level of functioning in the presence of a brain issue. Like financial reserve which we rely on during financial challenges, we rely on Cognitive Reserve if we experience a brain problem such as a stroke or extended exposure to stress. The good news is you are never too old to increase your Cognitive Reserve so let’s get started. When you enroll in the COPE Program I will:

1. Utilize my knowledge of cognitive functioning to help you increase your efficiency when completing any task. This will allow you to better manage productivity demands.

2. Develop more effective routines while extinguishing habits that are less effective. This will allow you to increase efficiency and productivity while decreasing your stress level.

3. Incorporate Mindfulness Training to maximize your cognitive functioning. Learning to be present in situations improves problem-solving abilities and increases your ability to “respond” rather than “react.”

4. Improve interpersonal communication skills to maximize success in your professional and personal life. Much of our daily stress is related to interpersonal issues. Becoming a more effective communicator can help reduce interpersonal conflicts while also increasing self-advocacy skills.

5. Provide brain health education and develop a personal plan to increase your cognitive reserve. In the event you experience a brain issue, you are more likely to be able to maintain a higher level of functioning because of the cognitive reserve you have established.
