Adults as well as children are spending increased time on screens, especially since COVID restrictions. This increase can have a negative impact on your brain health and ultimately reduce your ability to focus and recall information as well as increase negative emotions and anxiety. Although the reliance on technology is necessary at this time, we cannot ignore the potential consequences. As Benjamin Franklin said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Here are some suggestions to reduce your screen time and improve your brain health.
1. Alternate between printed pages and your computer screen. Print out information to review when possible.
2. Set reminders to take short breaks and walk away from your computer/device. Even short walks outside are beneficial.
3. Make calls whenever possible instead of sending texts or emails. This will also increase social interaction which is essential for brain health.
4. Set consistent times to check in with people throughout the day so they know you are accessible even though you are reducing your onscreen time.
5. Keep natural elements in your workspace like plants or a fish tank. Natural elements are calming to your brain and increase feelings of calm.
6. Close your eyes periodically and take 3 deep breaths. Complete neck rolls and shoulder shrugs. These short breaks can reduce stress which negatively impacts brain function.
7. Eat and hydrate. It’s easy to lose track of time and skip meals when you are sitting at your desk all day. Your brain needs water and nutrition to function; without them you will experience brain fog, decreased attention and negative emotions.
8. Consider using a Standing Desk if you are tied to your computer. This will allow for increased blood flow and change in posture. You can set timers to do some stretches throughout the day.
